Your gums are an integral part of your oral health, so when they’re inflamed, bleeding, or tender, it can be concerning. For patients in the know, a little anxiety may even begin to creep in as they wonder, “Is it gingivitis or something more serious?” Gum cancer shares many symptoms with gum disease, but while both conditions can cause issues, they’re very different in terms of severity. So, how do you know which is which, and when should you see a dentist? Read on to find out.

What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease caused by plaque buildup on your teeth and gums. When plaque isn’t removed through proper oral care like brushing and flossing, it can irritate your gums and lead to inflammation.

Common symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, and persistent bad breath or taste.

The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with better oral hygiene and professional cleanings. Left untreated, though, it can turn into periodontitis, a more severe gum infection that can damage tissue and bone!

What Is Gum Cancer?

Gum cancer is a rare form of oral cancer that develops in the soft tissues of the gums. While its origins can be unpredictable, the National Cancer Institute says that there are risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing it.

For example, tobacco use, drinking excessive alcohol, and prolonged exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV) have all been linked to several oral cancers.

So, if you experience a persistent sore or lump, white or red patches, bleeding, or numbness in or on your gums, it’s best to get screened. Unlike gingivitis, gum cancer doesn’t improve with better oral hygiene. You’ll need professional help.

Spotting Key Differences

While both conditions affect your gums, there are clear distinctions between gum disease and gum cancer. Here are some highlights:

  • Gingivitis often causes bleeding gums during brushing or flossing, while it may occur for seemingly no reason with gum cancer.
  • Swelling or redness from gingivitis is usually limited to your gumline. However, gum cancer might involve lumps, patches, or other changes.
  • Pain is another factor. Gingivitis is usually painless or causes only mild discomfort, but gum cancer can lead to persistent or worsening pain.

Creating a foundation of good oral hygiene is the secret to healthy gums and is key to preventing problems. However, it’s not always easy to tell conditions apart without help, so don’t hesitate to call your dentist. When oral care isn’t enough, it’s time to let a professional take over to preserve your healthy smile!
